Nevada Train Ride from Ely to Keystone & Adverse - Weekends
Nevada Train Ride from Ely to Keystone & Adverse
Built in 1905 & 1906, the Nevada Northern Railway is a portal back in time. It is dirty, noisy & gritty. It smells of coal smoke, creosote, & sweat. Locomotives whistle off, as they couple together. The wheels squeal as the locomotive is turned on the wye. At other times it's eerily quiet, where the only noise is hooting of the owl that lives in the coal tower. Marvel in the rich history of the best preserved standard-guage short line & complete rail facility left in America. Explore the facility experience what it took to move mountains of copper ore.
This is a combination tour from Ely to Keystone & Adverse with a 1 hour & 45 minute layover. The Combination Ticket is for both Routes. This tour has very limited availability so reserve well in advance!
**Museum admission is included in the cost of the train ride.
Often called the "best preserved" shortline in North America, the Nevada Northern was one of the last great mining railroads built in the early 20th century, carrying millions of tons of copper ore from Ely mines.
After cessation of railroad operations in 1983, it was donated to the non-profit White Pine Historical Railroad Foundation to operate as a working railroad museum.
Two excursion routes are operated; each trip is about 1.5 hours. The Keystone route travels around downtown Ely, then passes through tunnel No. 1; one of the few curved tunnels in the world and up scenic Robinson Canyon towards the mines. Or enjoy the scenic "Hiline" route through the Steptoe Valley and towards the former mill and smelter.
Complete railroad facilities including over 30 buildings, steam and diesel locomotives, and over 70 pieces of rolling stock.
Guided walking tours of the railroad facility are offered daily. Exhibits include the general offices, depot and dispatcher's office - which all appear as they did when the facility opened in 1907.
Also, tour the roundhouse, machine shop and blacksmith shop and view the historic rolling stock of steam, diesel and electric locomotives and turn-of-the-century passenger and freight cars.
An absolutely authentic collection of railroad equipment from one of the west's last great mining camps.
Tour does not include hotel pick up or drop off. Child rates apply to ages 4 through 12. Children ages 3 and under are free. Reserve online, or call us toll-free at 888-235-9819.
